To commemorate the forthcoming US launch of Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii on 21 November, Nintendo has filed a request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the popular pop-culture phrase “It’s on like Donkey Kong.”

This phrase has been used over the years not only within gaming circles but also within popular music, television shows as well as movies, pointing to the Donkey Kong’s iconic status as an enduring pop-culture symbol and video game star.

Donkey Kong is one of the oldest and most recognisable video game characters, since first appearing in his 1981 self-titled arcade game and going on to gain iconic status via the 1994 Super NES game Donkey Kong Country.

The latest iteration of that popular title, Donkey Kong Country Returns, will see gamers taking on new challenges within a new side-scrolling adventure. It also boasts the first simultaneous cooperative game-play mode for the series, with one player controlling Donkey Kong and the other controlling his agile friend, Diddy Kong.

Donkey Kong Country Returns will be released on the 21st of November in the States for the Wii and on 3 December in the UK.
