While much of the attention directed at Nintendo over the past couple of days have been focused on details surrounding the Nintendo 3DS, the company also announced the new Wii Remote Plus at their press briefing last night, an upgraded controller for the Nintendo Wii console.

The Wii Remote Plus is basically a standard Wii remote but with the Wii MotionPlus attachment built into the controller, instead of having it as an add-on. Nintendo said the new hardware is “for the convenience of users”, since they won't have to attach the MotionPlus peripheral to the bottom of their Wii Remote anymore.

The Wii Remote Plus will be available in four different colours including white, black, blue and pink. Nintendo hasn't announced any kind of pricing structure or release dates yet, saying it would be revealed at a later date.

The new controller sounds like a worthy addition, but we're wondering if this isn't too little, too late from Nintendo's side. The Wii's days certainly looks numbered now that its motion control isn't unique to the system any more thanks to Sony's PlayStation Move and Microsoft's upcoming Kinect peripheral.
