Nokia has launched its latest mobile phone, the X1-00, with which it is looking to bring musical performance to the masses.

In the areas where it will be available this new pocket-friendly (112.2 x 47.3 x 16 mm, 91g) device will retail for under €35 (less than R336), offering music fans maximum boom-per-buck with special hardware features.

There is a big speaker on the back of the phone rated at 106 phon, a measure of perceived loudness with the company stating that 106 phon is apparently loud enough to rattle your window frames.

The Finnish manufacturer has also made adjustments to the speaker’s frequency response, in order to ensure that, unlike common PC speakers and most other phone speakers, the sound remains undistorted when you crank up the volume.

Why sound matters

Nokia stated that ambient noise levels can be high in a lot of countries around the globe, so the boost in audio power will assist users in hearing their phone above the environmental noise. Secondly the company said that this device will be able to be employed as a music player by the entry-level market segment that it’s aimed at.

The X1-00 comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack, so users are able to connect it to their speakers or headphones. As it fits into the X range of Nokia phones (along with the X6 and X3 Touch and Type) it also incorporates dedicated media player keys (for skip, play and pause) as well as a handy single-key playlist creator.

Other features

Also offered is support for MicroSD cards for boosting the phone’s storage capability to up to 16 GB, as well as integrated FM radio.

Just like the ZTE S306 it also sports a dedicated torch to light up dark areas with the standby battery life rated at a sounds-too-good-to-be-true claim of 61 days.

A curious function of this mobile is its ability to allow users to have up to five different phone books, with Nokia claiming that a device like this might be shared between family members being the reason for its inclusion.

Nokia’s X1-00 will be operating on Symbian Series 30 mobile OS, but with an updated music player app, calendar, clock and calculator. It is scheduled to become available in selected markets during April. No local release info is currently available.
