Nokia scaling back Ovi Music Unlimited service
By Hanleigh Daniels 17 January 2011 | Categories: newsAfter The Esphoneblog reported that Nokia’s Ovi Music Unlimited service will be discontinued in the company’s home country of Finland, there was a lot of speculation on the web concerning the future of this service in other parts of the globe.
Nokia's Ovi Music Unlimited service enables owners of certain handsets (such as the Nokia X6) to download an unlimited number of tracks (within a limited time frame) from the Ovi music catalogue, which are then made available to them in DRM-free MP3 format.
According to a statement on the NokiaUsers blog, the company will be working with its partners to deliver original music services as part of its Ovi services during this year.
Nokia state that they will continue to offer 12 month Ovi Music Unlimited subscription services in China, India as well as Indonesia and will also be offering six month subscriptions in South Africa, Brazil, and Turkey.
“For other markets, we plan to cease producing Ovi Music Unlimited-edition devices at the end of the year. Naturally, there will be no disruption to the service for our existing customers in these markets or anyone who in the future purchases an Ovi Music Unlimited-edition device from stores while stocks last - they can continue to enjoy unlimited downloads for the duration of their original Ovi Music Unlimited subscription and keep those tracks forever.”
