Nvidia reveals current fiscal status and future SoC info
By Hanleigh Daniels 12 August 2011 | Categories: newsGraphics processor unit (GPU) maker Nvidia has released the financial results for its Q2 fiscal year 2012, with the company’s revenue up by 5.7% to $1.02 billion, compared to the prior quarter and 25.3% higher than that of the same quarter for the previous year ($811.2 million).
According the CNet, Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia’s president and chief executive officer, spoke about the company’s forthcoming Kal-El system-on-a-chip (SoC), during the earnings conference call. He stated that this mobile processor will deliver enhanced power efficiency when compared to the current dual-core Tegra 2, used in a range of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating tablets, such as the Acer Iconia Tab A500.
Kal-El is due later this year and Huang said that Nvidia is heavily invested in Google’s Android mobile operating system (OS), so: “As soon as the next-generation Kal-El processor goes into production we can run like the wind.” He added that he is looking forward to the next iteration of Android to follow Honeycomb, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, as he expects Nvidia to be very successful with it.
Nvidia’s Kal-El isn’t only destined for Android-running mobile devices though, as this SoC will also be doing duty in tablets and notebook PCs powered by Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 desktop OS. "We're very bullish on Windows 8 for the second half of next year," Huang stated.
"We grew solidly this quarter," said Jen-Hsun Huang. "Consumer demand for notebooks powered by our GeForce GPU, with its unique Optimus technology, resulted in record revenue for these products.”
"The future of computing is mobile and visual. With Tegra's momentum and our growing GPU businesses, we are ideally positioned to lead the industry forward," Huang concluded.
