PSP2 and PlayStation Phone unveiled soon
By Johan Keyter 19 January 2011 | Categories: newsAccording to Bloomberg, Sony is expected to unveil the latest iteration of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming range, the PSP2, on the 27th of January.
Citing “people with knowledge of the plans”, it also reported that Sony would be releasing its much rumoured gaming centric smartphone, the PlayStation Phone, this February.
It is also believed that Sony will be outlining a new strategy to use its networked entertainment services (such as the PlayStation Network) to share games, movies and music among its handheld range as well as among its other platforms and products.
Sony will attempt to use its newly updated handheld and new gaming smartphone to try and delve into a portable gaming market dominated by long-time rivals Nintendo. While Sony's PSP and PSP Go was by no means a failure, the devices were still out-shined by Nintendo's DS, DS Lite and DSi handheld systems.
According to research firm NPD Group, Sony's PSP has sold 18.5 million units in the US since its 2004 launch. Comparatively, Nintendo's DS family of products sold 47.4 million units.
Sony is up against a resilient Nintendo who is about to launch a successor to the popular DS in the form of the glasses-free, 3D enabled Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS is scheduled for a major unveiling later today at a function held in New York City.
What do you think will be the most successful of the new generation of handheld gaming systems? Will Nintendo domination continue under the 3DS or will Sony be able to strike back with the PSP2 and PlayStation Phone? Or is the iPhone the gaming platform of the future? Feel free to share your thoughts with us below.
