BlackBerry holding company Research In Motion (RIM) is still enormously popular in South Africa, as well as across the African continent. The Canadian smartphone and tablet PC maker has revealed that it has added over a million new subscribers to its base in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in less than three weeks.

The announcement came via the company’s official Twitter account and read: “Pow! @BlackBerry continues momentum across EMEA with 1 Million+ new subscribers added in less than 3 weeks. #teamblackberry ^CH”

Patrick Spence, RIM’s managing director of the EMEA region, stated: “BlackBerry continues to be the number one smartphone brand in a number of our markets, including the Netherlands, South Africa and the UK - where we also remain the number one smartphone vendor by total unit sales, and the number one prepay smartphone vendor.”

“Our smartphones including the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve also top the sales lists in countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia and we recently announced RIM’s international revenue for the first quarter had grown 67% year on year.”

Spence said that in the EMEA region the company will be focusing on improving the BlackBerry experience for existing customers, as well as on welcoming more and more new users to the BlackBerry community.

The latest (up to end of May 2011) mobile operating system (OS) breakdown information was also recently released, containing info about BlackBerry users who are downloading apps from its BlackBerry App World application store. This data amongst others, revealed that the majority (50%) of BlackBerry users utilise smartphones operating on BlackBerry 5 such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Curve 8520.
