Vodacom has announced that it is officially first to market with the Samsung’s Android based Galaxy S. 

 

The handset boasts a 4” Super AMOLED screen and is the first Samsung device to be based on Google’s Android platform. 

 

A few of the handset’s features include a 5MP camera, dual band 3G, 1 GHz application processor, rich augmented reality content through Layar Reality Browser and advanced LBS (location based services), 8 GB of memory plus an 8 GB micro SD card.

Operating on the Éclair 2.1 version of Android, the Samsung Galaxy S sets a new standard for smartphones – and it’s available in stores [today]” says Mark Taylor, managing executive of Terminals, Financial and Online Services at Vodacom.

 

At 9.9 mm, the Samsung Galaxy S is the thinnest touchscreen smartphone, this is due in part to its Super AMOLED display.

 

The Galaxy S has Samsung’s Social Hub, a combined stream of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter messages – complete with a desktop widget and the ability to send out an update to one or all services simultaneously.

 

The handset will be available at participating Vodacom outlets today, 20 August 2010. No pricing details are yet available.
