Samsung South Africa has confirmed, via its Twitter account, that local consumers will be able to purchase the company’s as yet unreleased tablet offering – the Samsung Galaxy tab.

Yesterday Samsung revealed in a message on the popular social networking service that “the Samsung Galaxy tab will be launched in South Africa” and provided a link to an image of the device which was later removed.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of several responses by technology manufacturers to Apple’s recently released iPad.

Early information regarding the device indicates that it will run on an Android based operating system with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, will feature a 7 inch AMOLED integrated touchscreen and will reportedly incorporate high definition capability.

What is more striking is that, until Samsung Blog South Africa broke the news, the company had been incredibly tight lipped regarding specifications and product information. As a result a number of international technology websites and blogs including Engadget and Gizmodo have published stories on the supposed leak.

Although official comment regarding the validity of the information and further details involving price and release dates was requested from Samsung South Africa no response had been received at the time of writing.
