Samsung is looking to strengthen its internally developed bada mobile operating system, first by enhancing the OS with the recent launch of the bada 2.0 SDK, and now by reportedly making it open-source next year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung Electronics is planning to open up its mobile software platform to external developers and device manufacturers in 2012. This move is aimed at accelerating the expansion and development of this mobile OS. The Korean tech giant is also looking to reduce its reliance on Google’s Android mobile OS in the wake of Google’s Motorola Mobility acquisition.

Samsung is "planning to make bada software an open source platform next year," a person familiar with the situation stated to the publication, adding that the South Korean firm doesn’t have any plans to purchase a software company. The last comment looks to be addressing last month’s rumours that Samsung was interested in HP’s webOS, as well as this month’s reports that the company is looking to acquire MeeGo.

Last year Nokia also followed the same open path with its Symbian mobile OS, but this move didn’t work out so well for the Finnish phone giant, with many Symbian handset makers dumping the OS in favour of Android.

In related news Samsung also recently filed a counter lawsuit against Apple Down Under, over wireless-technology patents that it says the iPad 2 and iPhone violate and launched its Samsung NC215S netbook, the world’s first solar powered 10" netbook.
