Samsung to release Android powered Acclaim handset
By Tom Manners 29 June 2010 | Categories: newsHandset manufacturer Samsung has officially announced the release and international pricing for the Android powered Acclaim smartphone, which will mark yet another foray on the company’s part towards Google’s open source operating system.
The Acclaim will operate using Android build 2.1 and will feature a 3.2” capacitive touch-screen with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It will also feature a 3 Megapixel camera with an LED flash, WiFi, Bluetooth and MicroSD support for up to 4 GB.
Although this handset is clearly not set to occupy the upper rungs of the smartphone pecking order it will certainly pack a punch at a reasonable price. The Acclaim will be available for roughly $100 (R750) internationally, situating it well within the reaches of lower to middle level smartphone buyers.
Samsung also has plans to take on more costly HTC, Apple and Blackberry devices with the release of its Galaxy Pro S, which is also Android powered with the inclusion of the company’s proprietary TouchWiz 3.0 user interface.
No local pricing or availability details regarding the Acclaim are yet available.
