News: Samsung unveils the Galaxy S3

After months of speculation, rumour and outright anticipation, Samsung has finally unveiled its latest Galaxy S3 smartphone in London, and the good news is that specifications-wise, it is at least almost as impressive as everyone has been hoping it would be.

For starters, the new phone does in fact boast a quad-core CPU, namely the Exynos 4 Quad chip. In our recent test of Asus’ quad-core Transformer Prime (albeit with a Tegra 3 chip), the performance and speed bump afforded by quad-core technology was significant, so hopefully the S3 will boast a similar speed increase as compared to the current crop of dual-core devices.

Additionally, the smartphone will also offer 1 GB of RAM (not the 2 GB that was rumoured) and come in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB variants.

The Galaxy S3 is a mere 8.6 mm thick at its thickest point, and sports a large 4.8" HD Super AMOLED screen.

Anyone for some ice cream?

Additionally, and unsurprisingly, the phone will run on Google’s newest operating system (OS) Android Ice Cream Sandwich, covered with some Samsung TouchWiz sauce.

Since its introduction of the ‘phablet’ Galaxy Note, Samsung has been pushing the boundaries of the sizes of its mobile devices, and this continues with the size of the S3’s HD Super AMOLED screen. The 720p (1280 by 720 pixels) resolution display is a considerable 4.8", which is notably larger than its predecessor (4.27").

Nonetheless, the Korean company has apparently been mindful of the portability factor, and the S3 weighs in at 133 g while being 8.6 mm thick. An 8 megapixel rear camera (and not the 12 megapixel one that was rumoured) is onboard, as is support for Bluetooth 4 and DLNA.

On mobile devices battery life is always a concern, but Samsung has reassured that the S3 will be up to the task, thanks to a 2100 mAh (removable) battery. Rather intriguingly, the phone will apparently benefit from wireless charging, although little further information on that is available at this point.

The debate about whether the S3 will have a physical home button or not can finally be settled – the phone does in fact have one and is supported by two capacitive buttons.

To the point

More good news is that the smartphone will apparently be coming fairly soon, and is set for release in Europe at the end of the month, which will then be followed by its launch in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

With the S3, the ball is also firmly in Apple’s court, and we expect will only move the companies ongoing rivalry more noticeably from the courtroom to the battlefields of winning over smartphone users’ hearts and wallets.

In recent news, it was revealed that Samsung has snatched Nokia’s crown for being the number one mobile phone vendor, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics.
