News: Samsung unveils three new devices

Ahead of Mobile World Congress, taking place this week in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung has leaked at least three new product announcements that gadget enthusiasts can expect from the Korean company.

The first of these is the launch of its Galaxy Tab 2 series, according to Engadget, which looks set to claim the crown of providing the successors to its Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7 tablets.

Unfortunately, the spec’s that have been revealed so far aren’t particularly groundbreaking. Both the 7” and 10.1” tablets will run off Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and sport a 1 GHz Dual-Core Processor (surprisingly, not a quad core as we would have expected) along with 1 GB of memory.

While the 7” variation will have a 7" WSVGA (1024x600) display, the 10.1” version will offer a 10.1" WXGA (1280x800) PLS TFT screen. The 7” Galaxy Tab 2 will be available in 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB variations, however, the 10.1” will only come in 16 GB and 32 GB options.

Bringing the stylus back

Of greater interest though, is the company’s second reveal - of a 10.1 Galaxy Note. This will offer a similar stylus (or S-pen) functionality that Samsung touted on its 5.3” Galaxy Note smartphone-tablet hybrid, albeit in a larger form factor.

With it, the Galaxy Note 10.1 seems even more fully aimed at artistic types who want to sketch, draw and write on their tablet with something other than a finger or third party stylus, which generally have thicker nibs that just don’t feel quite right for drawing and sketching.

Beyond this though, the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet appears to have slightly more impressive specs than the 10.1" Galaxy Tab 2 series, boasting a 1.4 GHz dual core processor (same as the original Note, but alas, still not quad core) and being made available in a 64 GB version.

Beam me up, Sammy

The third and final announcement – for now – is the Samsung Galaxy Beam, a projector smartphone that the company explained will “allows users to display and share multimedia content anywhere on a large luminous projector screen.”

Samsung elaborated that the Galaxy Beam can beam content stored on the device directly onto walls, ceilings or improvised flat surfaces, using an ultra-bright 15 lumens projector.

The device will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and sport a 1 GHz dual-core processor, as well as 8 GB of internal memory.

"GALAXY Beam provides mobile freedom, enabling a unique shared experience around digital content for everyone-anywhere and instantly-from a smartphone as slim and portable as any on the market," said JK Shin, president of IT and mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics.

To the point

The latter two products, at least, indicate that Samsung is still committed to trying new things in the tablet and smartphone arena. If nothing else, that is somewhat heartening as one of the year’s biggest mobile events gets underway.
