Sega announced yesterday that it is developing a new title based on Marvel Entertainment Inc.’s comic book character Thor.

Thor: The Video Game looks set to hit all major gaming platforms as a third-person adventure game in 2011. Eisner Award-winning writer and lead Thor comic book author Matt Fraction is consulting on the game’s storyline, which will see gamers going up against an array of ancient foes and creatures inspired by classic Norse mythology.

Using the sacred Mjolnir, Thor’s legendary hammer, players will be able to control the powers of the storm such as the wind, thunder and lightning in the game. Players will also earn Valor in combat throughout the game, which will allow them to acquire new abilities, attacks, powers as well as upgrades.

“We are proud to be bringing Thor to his first solo video game adventure” said Gary Knight, senior vice president of Marketing at Sega Europe and Sega America. “Thor: The Video Game will finally bring the immense power of this iconic hero to lifelong fans, and introduce the God of Thunder to a whole new audience as a true Marvel Super Hero.”

The game will be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable (PSP), Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.
