Skype has announced that it has released an update to its Skype for Symbian application, which sees this app now offering support for the new Symbian^3 mobile operating system (OS). This OS powers a couple of Nokia’s smartphones such as the N8, C7 and forthcoming E7.

The update also includes SILK, a high quality audio codec, which according to Skype should assist that calls are crystal clear, even when making use of a low-bandwidth connection.

Skype for Symbian will enable users to make Skype-to-Skype calls as well as chat (IM) to friends, colleagues and family on 3G (charged for data usage) or Wi-Fi (free), allowing them to save money on calls and texts to phones locally and abroad. Users will also be able to share pictures, videos and other documents and files from their phones.

The update also contains a number of interface improvements, which makes it simpler to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message. It will now also have the ability to better fit on larger display sizes.

Skype for Symbian can be downloaded by visiting the company’s mobile site (skype.com/m) from a user’s Symbian-powered mobile phone.
