News: Software firms announce plans for MeeGo

During the MeeGo Conference currently underway in San Francisco, a number of operating system vendors announced plans to integrate the latest common code base version of the Nokia and Intel’s Linux-based MeeGo OS, MeeGo v1.2, into their software.

Although developer support for the new mobile OS appears to be strong, Nokia has pushed MeeGo along with Symbian to the fringes, after its strategic partnership with Microsoft that will see Windows Phone OS playing the leading role in its smartphone show.

WeTab tablet PC to be upgraded to MeeGo v1.2

WeTab tablet PC maker 4tiitoo AG plans to upgrade WeTab OS, the OS running on its WeTab, to MeeGo v1.2. “The integration of MeeGo v1.2 constitutes another milestone in the development of the WeTab”, said Stephan Odörfer, CTO of 4tiitoo AG.

“With its open system architecture the WeTab offers not only an alternative to closed systems but also proves by its constant advancements the adaption to market developments and needs”.

More MeeGo-based tablet (and netbook) OSs coming

Red Flag Software will deliver some of the first MeeGo-based tablet operating systems that will feature a MeeGo-based user interface. Its tablet OS also supports netbook devices and the company will update its in-vehicle infotainment OS to incorporate MeeGo 1.2.

The Red Flag Midinux Tablet Edition OS will incorporate the MeeGo v1.2 common code base as well as a user experience (UX) built by Red Flag Software, that uses the MeeGo user interface building blocks.

According to Red Flag Software it will demonstrate the flexibility MeeGo offers software- and mobile vendors to differentiate their products. The company plans on giving a tablet demonstration during Computex, which is taking place in Taipei between 31 May and 4 June 2011.

Linpus also upgrading to MeeGo v1.2

Open-source solutions provider Linpus also announced its plans to upgrade both its netbook- and its tablet MeeGo-based operating systems to MeeGo v1.2.

Linpus Lite for MeeGo tablet and netbook editions incorporate the MeeGo common code base and have a user experience built by Linpus, as well as the MeeGo UI building blocks. Just as Red Flag Software, Linpus will be demonstrating its full range of products during Computex.

It is expected that LG Electronics will also be presenting products during the MeeGo Conference, including MeeGo v1.2 ports on a number of prototype devices, such as tablet PCs and smartphones.
