Fans of Sony’s smartphones now have a go-to place to see the Android-running Xperia range in action, since Sony Mobile Communications has opened the renewed Sony Mobile Store at Vodaworld in Johannesburg. The store promises to showcase and reflect Sony Mobile’s integration of Xperia Smartphones together with the wide range of Sony products within the Sony family.

The Sony branded store will offer consumers the opportunity to experience Sony’s brand promise through interactive displays with the extensive Sony range of products including TVs, tablets, headphones and Bluetooth wireless speakers. It will also provide access to the latest Sony Mobile Xperia smartphones along with a host of Sony smart accessories.

To see the different Sony products interact with each other is a valuable experience, since integration across platforms is one of the benefits of Sony’s extensive product ranges.

At the opening we spoke to Spyros Gousetis, director of marketing at Sony Mobile Communication Middle East and Africa, who was quick to point out this “ecosystem” and how the Sony smartphones fit in with the rest of the Sony family. He also mentioned Sony’s ability to include features from their other ranges on its Xperia smartphones, citing the Bravia Engine from Sony’s TVs, its Cyber-shot Walkman software, and Exmore RS sensors from their Cyber-shot camera range.

Gousetis said that Android remains Sony’s primary operating system, but did mention that the company has no obligation to only stick with Android in future, and are open to look at other operating platforms. Although no such plans were mentioned directly, it does pose the question whether this could mean that we might see a Sony Windows Phone device in future.

In related Sony news, the company announced the start of the Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for the Xperia goXperia U and Xperia sola smartphones, which up until now had to be satisfied with Gingerbread.
