Sony has unveiled a new notebook boasting 3D technology at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas yesterday, dubbed the VAIO F Series 3D laptop. It looks set to take on a range of 3D notebooks from the Japanese company’s competitors, the likes of the Asus G51J 3D Gaming Notebook, Acer’s Aspire 5738G as well as the LG Xnote A510

The VAIO F Series 3D laptop sports Sony’s Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16" 3D LED widescreen backlight display, which employs a built-in 3D sync transmitter and includes 3D active shutter glasses. This allows users to view 3D movies as well as photos in full HD (1080p) picture quality, plus play certain supported gaming titles in 3D. It also features a 3D button that enables them to convert 2D HD video and DVD/Blu-ray movies to 3D in real time.

Taking care of the processing will be Intel’s second generation Core i7 CPU with four cores and support for Intel Hyper-Threading as well as Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0. The graphics are done and dusted via Nvidia’s newly announced GeForce 500M series (a Nvidia GeForce GT 540M with 1 GB of dedicated VRAM).

“This laptop is a multimedia powerhouse melding cutting-edge technologies such as Blu-ray Disc and 3D functionality into one portable device” said Mike Lucas, senior vice president of the VAIO business group at Sony. “Now consumers can experience an unparalleled, immersive entertainment experience on their terms- in the living room, on–the-go, wherever.”

Sony’s latest notebook also features a Blu-ray disc optical drive for viewing high-definition content and to read as well as to write to CDs or DVDs. Impressive sound quality will also be provided via Sony’s S-Force Front Surround 3D system, which offers extended stereo effect plus simulated 5-channel surround sound.

The VAIO F Series 3D laptop packs Windows 7 Home Premium and also has a dedicated VIAO button that will launch Sony’s Media Gallery software, giving users one-button access to all their favourite music and photos. It will be available for pre-orders in the US as of next month for about $1 700 (around R11 440). No word yet on local availability and pricing.
