Sony is pulling out all the stops to revitalise interest in its consoles and related services, at the Gamescom event, which is currently underway in Cologne, Germany.

The latest news coming from the company includes further details of its PlayStation Mobile service, which will offer players games from both independent and large developers, that would be playable across several different devices.

According to Jim Ryan, the chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, games bought on the PlayStation store will be connected to players’ PlayStation Network (PSN) ID.

This would mean that players would be able to make a once off purchase of a PlayStation Mobile game, and then play it on their PlayStation Vita or any PlayStation certified device, such as Sony’s own Android-running tablets, as well as other Android tablets that are PlayStation certified.

Sony’s revelation comes in the wake of rumours, and tantalising glimpses, of what some suspect may well be a new Xperia tablet from Sony, that would ostensibly replace the Tablet S, and which may well boast Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) if not Jelly Bean.

Additionally, following on from Sony’s previous announcement earlier this year, that it was partnering with HTC to create several Android-based, and PlayStation certified, smartphones, Sony also added two new partners to its PlayStation certified partnership roster, namely Asus and Wikipad.

Cross-Buy spells Happy-Bargains

However, the good news, particularly for Vita owners, did not stop there, as along the same lines, the company announced its ‘Cross-Buy’ program. This would offer those who buy PS3 versions of certain games complimentary copies of the Vita versions of the games as well.

Currently, games that will be part of this program include the forthcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time  and Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault.

Additionally, Sony continued that PlayStation Plus’ cloud storage will receive a generous (and considerable) increase in capacity, from the current 150 MB of space, to a far roomier 1 GB. The PlayStation Plus service (and its cloud storage) was further confirmed as coming to Sony’s latest handheld in the near future as well.

To the point

These announcements, along with the titles being unveiled for the PS3 and Vita alike at the games convention, point to a company that is coming out swinging in all the right ways, namely by asking how it can appeal to users and offer players invested in its ecosystem greater value.
