Sony unveils massive 84 inch Bravia TV
By Ryan Noik 30 August 2012 | Categories: newsThose who want their LCD TV to not merely fill their living room, but to dominate it, may well be pleased to hear that Sony has unveiled its latest Bravia LCD TV, which is a whopping 84".
The TV boasts a substantial 4K (3840 x 2160) LCD panel, incorporating the company’s “4K X-Reality PRO” super-resolution high picture quality engine.
Sony asserted that both these elements will jointly deliver “a high-resolution large-screen picture with high-quality powerful sound, to provide viewers with an immersive experience unlike anything offered by existing televisions.”
Image quality, redefined
The company further elaborated that 4K X-Reality PRO engine is capable of reproducing a variety of content with different resolutions, such as HD digital broadcasts or Blu-ray discs content, into crisp, high-quality images with 4K resolution.
“This television re-defines image quality. The super-high resolution and large screen size ensure a picture experience that is close to reality - 4K is a massive jump in resolution and image quality even when compared to so-called Full High Definition (1080 line) displays,” asserted Andrew Fraser, senior brand manager for Sony South Africa.
Befitting a set of this size, and the natural assumption that multiple viewers will be watching it simultaneously, the TV also offers a wide 60-degree viewing angle. Sony added that this applies with users who are sitting as much as half the distance to the screen, as compared to when viewing full HD, for which a distance equal to three times the screen height is recommended.
Sound reasoning
On a TV though, the image on offer is only half the package. No less important is the sound that the TV can accommodate. To this end, the company detailed that also on offer is a 10 Unit Live Speaker side speaker system, which has been optimised for the large-size screen.
Additionally, the company added that its high-quality sound signal-processing technology achieves “powerful three-dimensional sound, enveloping the viewer in position-orienting tones, from deep bass to high notes.”
Furthermore, Sony added that its PlayStation 3 software, PlayMemories Studio, will enable users to organise and playback high resolution photographs with ease on the 4K television.
To the point
The company concluded with a rather tantalising statement, that, going forward, it was “aiming to offer new television viewing styles by continuing to provide these kinds of new consumer experiences.”

The best news of all though, is that apparently the set will be available locally at an as yet unspecified point between now and March 2013.
While prices have yet to be announced, we suspect that the TV will have a price tag befitting its size and high resolution. However, we also suspect it will in all likelihood still be cheaper than buying one’s own private cinema.
