Sony has unveiled its NEX-VG10E Full HD camcorder, which it claims is the world’s first consumer HD camcorder that utilises interchangeable lenses. This camcorder is also the first Sony Handycam to boast an extra-large Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor that allows the creation of cinematic background defocus effects.

The VG10E is compatible with a selection of high quality E-mount lenses and by using the optional LA-EA1 mount adaptor, users can also get to employ a wide range of A-mount DSLR optics.

Sony’s NEX-VG10E makes use of a 14.2 effective megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor as well as the Japanese company’s BIONZ processor, in order to capture high resolution videos and still images. This sensor is around 19.5 times larger than the standard sensor found in other consumer camcorders.

Full HD 1920 x 1080 video images are captured in AVCHD format at up to 24 Mbps bit rate, while the VG10E sports an image-stabilised E18-200 mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens that offers 11x optical zoom.

Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software, which includes the editing tools required for the production of HD movies, will be available to customers as a free download.

The Handycam NEX-VG10E will be locally available as of October 2010 for a recommended retail price of R23 000.
