It's not only Nokia releasing new handsets. Sony Ericsson has also announced three new handsets to hit the market in quarter three this year - the affordable HSDPA enabled Cedar, the first full touch Walkman phone dubbed the Yendo and the Android supporting Xperia X8.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8

The Xperia X8 seems to be the most interesting and has a lot in common with X10 mini, at least on the user interface side. This Android phone (Donut, version 1.6) sports Sony Ericsson’s smart Timescape skin, giving instant access to social networking and email, plus the icons on the four corners of the 3” capacitive touch-screen can be customised with different apps and widgets to allow easy one handed access. The phone runs a 600 MHz processor and includes HSDPA, aGPS and Wi-Fi.

Sony Ericsson Yendo

The Yendo is Sony Ericsson’s move to a full touch-screen Walkman phone and it sports a 2.6” resistive touch-screen. This Edge enabled phone should be available in a range of colours and also features the “four corners, four icons” UI of the X8, although it runs on Sony Ericsson’s proprietary operating system and not Android. Users will also be able to access Facebook and Twitter, but the two megapixel camera isn’t exactly ground-breaking.

Sony Ericsson Cedar

The final handset to be released is called the Cedar and forms part of SE’s GreenHeart range of environmentally conscious phones. It’s an affordable HSDPA phone with access to the most important social networks, a two megapixel camera, a 3.5 mm jack but really not much else.

All these phones will be released internationally in quarter three, with South African pricing and availability still to be determined.
