Nintendo has unveiled its next generation portable gaming system, the 3DS, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

Like 3DTVs and 3D gaming notebooks, the 3DS will see users enjoying the latest titles in three dimensions, but unlike the others no 3D glasses are required.

According to CNN, the 3DS has two displays, one (3.5") screen showcasing the 3D gaming content and another smaller one featuring a touch interface which controls the action in the games. Nintendo has included two cameras at the back of the device which will allow users to capture pictures in 3D, a move that might push 3D photography beyond the fringes. There is also a camera located above the top display, which enables users to take photos of themselves while they are using the device.

Also new to the DS range is the inclusion of a gyroscope and a motion sensor, allowing for motion-based game controls, much like that available on the iPhone 3GS.

Some of the games that will be available for the device at its launch include Madden football, FIFA soccer, a Resident Evil title, Batman, an Assassin’s Creed release and a game in the Metal Gear Solid series. The Japanese company did not provide any details about when the 3DS will begin shipping or how much gamers should expect to fork out for it.
