Toshiba has come a long way since producing the first Intel 286-based clamshell laptop 25 years ago. And today the clamshell is back as they unveiled the Toshiba Libretto W100, the world’s first dual touch-screen laptop.
The Libretto's most impressive feature is its two 7" diagonal touch-screens which are able to work independently or together. This means you can surf the web on one screen whilst checking email or documents on the other, even displaying a webpage across both screens simultaneously.
Although it looks like it lacks a keyboard, the Libretto W100 features six virtual keyboard modes plus a virtual touchpad featuring haptic technology for fast and accurate feedback.
Both displays also include built-in 3D accelerometers which allow the W100 to rotate into portrait or landscape modes, giving the device a tablet computer feel.
This ultraportable machine is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 processor with 2GB DDR3 RAM and a 62 GB SSD, with Windows 7 Home Premium available as the preloaded OS. And weighing in at just over 800 grams and measuring 12 cm by 20 cm when closed, the W100 is definitely one of the more portable of the portable computers around today.
Revealed as part of Toshiba’s 25th Anniversary of Laptop Innovation Milestone, the limited edition Libretto W100 will be made available to the public in limited numbers. The reasoning behind this is that since this is the first technology of its kind, Toshiba wants early technology adopters to test it out so they can get some feedback in. Nonetheless, this is surely the start of something new.
Features available on the Toshiba libretto W100 include:
- Dual 7.0" diagonal multi-touch displays (1024 x 600)
- 6-mode virtual keyboard with haptic response
- Windows 7 Home Premium operating system
- Intel Pentium U5400 processor (1.2 GHz)
