Twitter suffers another security breach
By Mike Joubert 16 July 2009 | Categories: newsMicroblogging site Twitter suffered another blow to its security when an administrative employee’s email account was hacked. This led to internal Twitter documents being published on the Net.
After hackers gained access to the employee’s email they managed to access her Google Apps account which carried the documents. Twitter uses Google Apps internally to share spreadsheets, ideas, financial details and more within the company.
From a statement on Twitter’s blog the company was quick to point out that it was only internal documents that were accessed and not any details regarding Twitter user accounts.
According to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone: “This was not a hack on the Twitter service, it was a personal attack followed by the theft of private company documents.” Stone said that the stolen documents are an embarrassment but does not reveal anything dramatic about the company’s future. “Nevertheless, as they were never meant for public communication, publishing these documents publicly could jeopardize relationships with Twitter\'s ongoing and potential partners.” he continued.
Twitter\'s security was questioned in the past after Twitter user accounts were compromised.
