VLC Media Player released for iPad
By Tom Manners 21 September 2010 | Categories: newsIn an exciting move for iPad users, Apple has allowed a VLC media player application access to the iStore, giving the tablet PC greater access to video content.
VLC Media Player is widely regarded as one of (if not the) most comprehensive freeware media players currently available today. It boasts codecs for almost every imaginable video format, making it a strong tool for any regular media user.
Until now, one of the criticisms levelled at the iPad (and Apple devices in general) was Apple’s closed off policy towards media content and video formats. The iPad supports only .m4v, .mp4, and .mov formats natively, which is considerably limiting as the majority of video files are shared in .avi format.
VLC Media Player however boasts compatibility with almost every common video format.
This move may be part of Apple’s defence against the recently released Android based Samsung Galaxy Tab, which features an impressive list of format capabilities natively.
No word on what price VLC will retail for on the iStore has yet been given.
