News: Vodacom to launch consumer ADSL service

Local mobile provider Vodacom has confirmed that it will be launching a consumer based ADSL service which will compliment its current wireless and business offerings.

According to a report on technology news website MyBroadband, the company is planning on rolling out an ADSL service directly to consumers which should act as a response to Telkom’s entrance into the mobile broadband business.

Vodacom, South Africa’s largest mobile provider, has been actively working towards building an ADSL service since 2007, initially as a reseller but also with the intention of providing services using its own bandwidth.

In addition, the groups’ business arm has developed its own uncapped 4 Mbps offering which competes directly with Internet Solutions, which is South Africa’s most established internet service and infrastructure provider.

Mobile Battle

Although Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys is remaining tight lipped regarding Vodacom’s reasoning for planning a consumer based ADSl service it seems clear that it serves as a response to Telkom’s intentions for the mobile space.

Telkom CEO Reuben September recently announced that Telkom Mobile, which will act as an additional mobile broadband provider in South Africa, will be launched before the end of the year and will use the MTN network for roaming purposes.

It appears therefore that the stage is set for a broadband battle between both Telkom and Vodacom as each provider will clearly move towards offering a bundled 3G/HSDPA, WiFi and ADSL to the local market.
