The local prices for the forthcoming Wii U console have been officially confirmed by Core Gaming Systems, the official distributor of Nintendo hardware and software in South Africa.

The announcement comes almost exactly a month to the day of the Wii U’s impending launch in South Africa – 30th November.

According to the Core Group, the Wii U Basic Pack, which will consist of a Wii U console with 8 GB internal storage and a Wii U GamePad, both in white, has a recommended retail price of R4 000. The Wii U Premium Pack, meanwhile, which will consist of a black Wii U console and Wii U GamePad, 32 GB of internal storage and will be bundled with Nintendo Land, has a recommended retail price of R4 600.

Additionally, the company announced that survival horror fans can also look forward to a limited edition ZombiU Wii U Premium Pack. This will similarly contain a black Wii U console and Wii U GamePad and Pro Controller, along with the survival horror game, and will have a recommended retail price of R5000.

Surpassed, but still useful

The company stressed that for existing Wii owners, all first party Wii peripherals will be compatible with the Wii U console, adding that as neither Wii U hardware pack will include a Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii owners won’t need to repurchase peripherals they already own.

For players who don’t already own a Wii console, Nintendo has created a Wii Remote Plus Additional Set, which consists of a Wii Remote Plus controller, Nunchuk and sensor bar, and has a recommended retail price of R900.

Along with New Super Mario Bros. U (R600) and Nintendo Land (R500), other Wii U games that will be available at launch and within the console’s launch window (from November till the end of March) will include Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Darksiders 2, Assassin’s Creed III, LEGO City: Undercover, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, FIFA 13, ZombiU, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Ninja Gaiden 3.

To the point

Finally, South African gamers have all the information at their fingers to determine whether this will be their prime holiday season gaming purchase.

Now that we have seen the Wii U in action, and know exactly how much it will cost, the big question that needs to be asked – and which Nintendo is no doubt fervently anticipating an answer to - could be summed up as: Wiill U or won’t you (buy one)?
