It has only been a week since Microsoft launched Windows Phone Series (WPS) 7, and already the rumour mill is a churning with speculation that the software giant is planning to purchase Canada’s BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) or Finland’s Nokia. 
 
The source of this new wave of speculation is a Reuters article stating that Microsoft may eventually need to acquire Nokia or RIM in order to reverse the downward trend that WinMo is experiencing in terms of smartphone marketshare. The article points out that Microsoft, just like Apple and Google, may have a long term view to bring out its own phone hardware, rather than just a mobile OS.
 
Although WPS 7 is looking quite good, the article claims it isn’t going to reverse that trend, and may even make it worse as prospective smartphone buyers will hold out for phones launched with WPS 7, rather than buy current WinMo 6.5 based devices.

Stranger rumours have proven true, but we're not holding our breath on this one.
