Xoom successors may be in the works
By Ryan Noik 26 September 2011 | Categories: newsOne of the questions on our minds after Google’s acquisition of Motorola last month, is what Motorola will do following the move. If rumours are to be believed, then Motorola may be working on not one but two successors to its Motorola XOOM, a tablet we reviewed and found to be a generally solid entry in the tablet market.
According to This is my next, the XOOM 2 will sport a 10.1” screen, an as yet unspecified dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of memory, and add an additional hour of battery life to the original model’s ten hours, in a 9 mm thick frame (almost 4 mm thinner than the original model’s 12.9 mm). We don’t as yet know what impact this will have on the weight of the device – but as the first XOOM weighed in at a rather substantial 730 g, there was certainly room to reduce that.
According to Engadget, the tablet will run Android Honeycomb 3.2 and boast a five megapixel camera. Of equal interest it that the 10.1” tablet will reportedly be accompanied by an 8.2” Media Edition tablet that will have the same thinness as its larger sibling.
In the leaked photos on the site, both XOOM’s appear to have had a significant design overhaul, boasting rounded corners and a far more streamlined, sleek and futuristic design than the original’s utilitarian looks. There’s no word as yet on what software features may be included though, and this is where the real test for the Google-Motorola acquisition will likely prove its value, and show whether other manufacturers running on Android have legitimate cause for concern about the acquisition.
