Video sharing site YouTube yesterday announced that it is lifting the 15 minute time limit on certain uploaded videos, shared by certain users.

According to the New York Times, the website is changing its stance on longer videos as competing services such as Hulu and Netflix are offering users full length TV shows and movies online.

The change in upload limits will allow the site to host longer videos such as lectures by professors, conference talks and films by independent filmmakers, said Joshua Siegel, a product manager at YouTube.

It could of course also open the door to unscrupulous individuals who record full length movies in theatres to upload those movies to YouTube, but the site says it's got the situation under control.

To curb users spreading copyrighted material without permission YouTube uses a system known as Content ID which recognises copyrighted content and gives the owners the option to block, track or earn money from ads shown alongside the video.

Mr. Siegel said the the lifting of time limits for videos “has primarily been made possible by advances in Content ID.”

According to the site, YouTube's Content ID system scans more than 100 years worth of video every day to check for copyright infringements.

Initially the new features will only be available to select YouTube users who have never violated copyright rules and who have followed YouTube's community guidelines. Select content owners who partner with YouTube, like National Geographic, is already allowed to upload longer videos meaning you can now watch full length, high quality National Geographic documentaries directly on YouTube.
