Vodacom has announced a big increase in Opera Mini usage in the wake of a recent promotional competition, in which entrants stood a chance of driving away in a Mini Cooper Convertible.

“The response to the competition was overwhelming, with phenomenal growth in both unique users and page views,” said Mark Taylor, managing executive at Vodacom South Africa.

“Total monthly downloads increased by 120%, whilst the number of unique users increased by 38% which boosted Opera Mini data usage to new heights. This shows that South Africans are hungry for quality Internet access, speed, and affordability,” concluded Taylor.

South Africa currently ranks among the top 10 Opera Mini using countries in the world (as well as no.1 on the African continent) and the consumer appetite for this fast and efficient mobile Internet browser is set to increase even further within the next few years.

Vodafone Opera Mini v5.0 is an advanced mobile internet browser, which turns any website into a mobisite, enabling users to navigate any website faster and easier. Opera Mini compresses web pages by up to 90%, allowing these pages to be downloaded faster, as well as reducing the cost of browsing.

To get Opera Mini, Vodacom customers can SMS “Opera” to 31116 (free of charge) and follow the link to download the mobile browser. Downloading Opera Mini is free of charge for all Vodacom customers.

The latest State of the Mobile Web Report from Opera Software also showed that Sudan and Zimbabwe lead the top 10 African countries in terms of page-view growth, growth of unique users and the increase in data transferred.
