LG is out to make life good for all netbook and slim notebook owners requiring an external optical solution for their too-slim-to-have-DVD-drive computers.

The Portable Super Multi Drive from LG Electronics is very, well, portable as the name suggests, sporting a low-on-fat design, measuring only 153 x 163 x 24 mm and weighing a mere 370 g. It's more curvy than the Samsung Super WriteMaster Slim External DVD-writer, and just like its counterpart it's powered via a USB cable, the length of which is adequate for the intended use.

You can write CDs at 24x speed and DVDs at 8x speed while the drive supports CD, DVD±R, as well as DVD-RAM formats. You’ll be writing these using LG Burning Tools (basically Nero Smart Essentials with an LG interface), with your backup and restore jobs handled via CyberLink PowerBackup. Both of these programs are easy to install and very intuitive to use. The Portable Super Multi Drive comes with a RRP of R700 and is available from PC Pro Shop on 012-348-4000.

PROS
Very portable small and lightweight and has a really intuitive burning software user interface.
CONS
More expensive than Samsung's external DVD writer.
