Microsoft Studios is working on a new Age of Empires PC game. The developer confirmed the news with an announcement at Gamescom 2017, with Age of Empires IV set to be the first addition to the real-time strategy franchise in more than a decade.

There isn’t a release date mentioned for the Age of Empires IV just yet, but the announcement should be welcome news for fans of the franchise back in its Windows 98 days. Also amiss is which century the game will take place in, or indeed what the focus of the storyline will be, but to tide fans over until more details are revealed, Microsoft showcased a trailer for Age of Empires: The Definitive Edition.

It’s set to land on Windows 10 PCs as an exclusive title on 19 October, and celebrates the 20 year anniversary of the franchise. Along with improving the graphics for the Definitive Edition, the animations have been enhanced, as well as with new zooming levels and a refined user interface.

Microsoft also confirmed that it’s working on Definitive Editions for Age of Empires II and III, so there should be plenty for fans of the franchise to look forward to.
