Alienware came to the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), which took place in Las Vegas last week, with a slew of new developments. First up was the debut of a new design identity called Alienware Legend.

While the design has continued taking cues from the brand’s deep roots in sci-fi culture, there are also some new elements that have been incorporated. More particularly, according to the company, the new Legend design is optimised with cutting-edge thermal and cooling technology to achieve and sustain overclocking power, improved AlienFX lighting, and ultra-thin screen borders. As well, Legend boasts a new “three-knuckle hinge” design that reduces the overall dimension of the machine while creating a stronger assembly. Legend also introduces two optional finishes, Lunar Light and Dark Side of the Moon.

The company also showcased its thinnest and lightest 17” gaming notebook to date, the new Alienware m17. It billed this as being powerful enough to handle high-graphic games, yet portable enough to take from one destination to another, with a starting weight of 2.6 kg. That’s quite a feat if they can pull it off, since you don’t typically think of high end gaming rigs as being portable.

Performance is delivered with the 8^th-gen Intel Core i5 and i7 processors featuring dynamic CPU overclocking, thanks to elevated thermal headroom from Cryo-Tech Cooling technology.  The processors have then been are paired with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series GPUs, which Alienware asserted “deliver advanced gaming features including real-time ray tracing, artificial intelligence and programmable shading.”

Depending on the configuration, the screen resolution ranges from a 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) with 300 nits of brightness offering on the entry level model, all the way up to a 17.3" UHD (3840 x 2160) 60Hz IPS display that boasts 400-nits of brightness. As to memory, this ranges from a user configurable 8 GB up to 16 GB.

Also announced was a significant update to the Alienware Command Center, the central hub that allows gamers to customise all aspects of their experience including system and peripheral lighting, power management, thermal control, overclocking, audio, and content organisation.

More specifically, the Alienware Command Center now offers GPU overclocking (and underclocking), allowing changes to take effect at the system level and work in conjunction with CPU and RAM overclocking as well as thermals. These user interface improvements to make Alienware Command Center easier to use.
