Apple's annual Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) kicked off yesterday in San Francisco, California, with the world's media anxiously anticipating what new devices the Cupertino-based manufacturer will reveal. The first day of this five day long conference did not disappoint as Apple unveiled its newly designed OS X software - OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

Yosemite follows in the steps of OS X 10.9 Mavericks which debuted last year, and features a host of design refinements and new apps aimed at enhancing the Mac users experience. The overall look and feel of this new OS is said to be ‘flatter’ than that of Mavericks, and delivers a modern aesthetic reminiscent of Apple's iOS 7 interface.

New features include the Today view, which offers users a notification centre that places all the important information and events in an easier layout. Another is iCloud Drive, now located in Finder, with the ability to quickly store and access multiple file types. Enhancements have also been integrated into Safari, with a cleaner design that makes all browsing controls more visible. One of the new apps that made its debut is Handover, which allows users to begin a task of their iMac or MacBook, and then pass it onto another, like an iPhone or iPad for example, and vice versa.

Apple says developers will be able to begin working with the OS X Yosemite platform as of today, with a public beta of the software available for public testing in mid-July, but no official release date has been set yet. Apple went on to detail that upon completion of testing, OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be available for free download to all existing OS X users.      

Along with this new PC/Notebook OS software, many experts are predicting a new mobile operating system to makes its debut at WWDC, along with a range of refreshed products. TechSmart will be sure to keep updates on all happenings at this year's WWDC in the coming days.
