BMW launches car subscription pilot program starting at $2 000 per month
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 5 April 2018 | Categories: NewsIf you live in the States and fancy driving a luxury Bavarian vehicle, BMW's latest announcement may be of interest. The carmaker is set to launch a subscription service in the United States, allowing those who sign up and pay the monthly fees the chance to drive some of their most prized offerings.
There are a few tiers to this system, the basic version costing an estimated $2 000 (R23 800) and granting access to cars like the M2 and X5, as well as vehicles in the 4 Series and 5 Series lineups. Paying a fair bit more at $3 700 (R44 000) will open up the M tier of cars, including the M4 Convertible, M5, M6 and X5 M.
With Porsche recently debuting a similar offering named Passport, it's clear that German carmakers are trying to gain more traction in the US market. Whether or not a subscription service will allow them to do that remains to be seen.
With BMW and Porsche alike well known car brands locally, perhaps a similar initiative could launch on shores. At almost R25k a month though, it will clearly be aimed at the 1%.
