The past two years has been nostalgia filled when it comes to consumer technology and entertainment. Hollywood is obsessed with rebooting old franchises, and the tech world has a love affair for reintroducing beloved devices from yesteryear. Case in point - a new Tamagotchi.

If you're old enough to remember when the small virtual pets started invading playgrounds and classrooms the world over, you're probably nearing or in the midst of your thirties. Now, Bandai America is launching a special 20th Anniversary edition of the Tamagotchi, marking two decades since its first arrival.

The Anniversary model of the Tamagotchi is slated for the States alone at this stage, with a 5 November release date on the cards. This special edition version is also based on the original 1997 Tamagotchi, with a recommended retail price of $14.99 (R204).

Whether or not this Anniversary edition can conjure up the same nostalgia as the original remains to be seen, or indeed if consumer interest is even that high, given the lure of smartphones and apps.
