Best new trailers of the week - 19 May
By Staff Writer 19 May 2017 | Categories: newsThe past week was a busy one on the trailer front, and we could have easily doubled the selection. Instead, here are eight of the best new trailers in the business.
Okja
Release date: 28 June 2017
If you’ve seen Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer, you know why we’re excited about his Netflix movie Okja. The flick has a certain anime feel to it, not only in visuals but also in story. A huge, loveable creature is kidnapped by a multinational organisation with the goal of feeding the planet. The selfish owner doesn’t realise the larger beneficial implications of a reliable food source, and teams up with a terrorist organisation to get the creature back. As in Snowpiercer the ever-strange Tilda Swinton stars, while one of our favourites, Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) is also onboard.
Best bit: Every part with Swinton.
The Mummy, Trailer 3
Release date: 9 June
It takes a monster to defeat a monster. Herein lies one of the clues for the new The Mummy movie, with trailer number three showing that our hero, Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) needs to tap some of his dark side to get the job done. All we are hoping for is that The Mummy’s cursed ancient evil (Sofia Boutella) does a better job than the cursed ancient evil in Suicide Squad and the cursed ancient evil in X-Men: Apocalypse.
Best bit: Morton taking a Dragon Ball Z-like pummelling at 1:18.
The Emoji Movie
Release date: 22 Sept
When we first heard that Emoji’s are getting a movie, it was just another sign portending the sooner-than-expected apocalypse. The trailer for The Emoji Movie has now been released, and, well if we had to admit, it looks a lot better than expected. Gene (T.J. Miller, Silicon Valley) is a ‘meh’ emoji but has trouble expressing just one emotion. This sends him and a few other outcasts on an adventure in search of the fabled source code.
Best bit: Realising that this could have been a whole lot worse.
The Orville
Release date: 2017
Galaxy Quest. If you haven’t seen it you have missed an amazing spoof of the Star Trek franchise, not that there were many. It starred Snape, Ellen Ripley and Buzz Lightyear, and took us on a joy-filled adventure across the galaxy, showcasing director Dean Parisot‘s (Red 2) undisputed love of Gene Roddenberry’s original series. The Orville on the other hand looks a bit ham-fisted, with Seth MacFarlane set to do to space crews what he did to cowboys in A Million Ways to Die in the West.
Best bit: Drinking on the job at 2:37.
Star Trek: Discovery
Release date: 2017
Talking of Star Trek, there is a new series in the pipeline destined for Netflix, and the first trailer for Discovery has now dropped. Discovery seems to be a major departure from the look and feel of the old TV series, appearing closer aligned to J.J. Abrams’s movies. Also getting a makeover is the Klingons, looking far less, well Klingonly, than what we are used to. We’ll let that one be fiercely debated by Trekkies, in the meantime, may the lens flare be with you in the trailer below.
Best bit: The hint of an old familiar tune at 1:16.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
Release date: 2018
If you remember The Dark Crystal then a) you’re giving away your age, and b) you were most probably haunted by it if you watched it as a kid. With frightening, nightmare inducing puppets courtesy of Jim Henson, this 1982 movie is a certainly a cult classic. Netflix teased a bit of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a ten-part series coming to the streaming service in 2018. And by teased we mean having Henson explain the significance of the original movie.
Best bit: Getting a behind the scenes look at the original movie.
Baywatch Red Band Trailer
Release date: 2 June
Get ready for some 2-18 potty mouth escapades in the Red Band trailer for Baywatch. While you might have your own opinion on the jokes emanating from the trailer, it does go to show that director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is willing to send the movie in a slightly different direction than the squeaky clean (except for the curves) TV series.
Best bit: Getting an underwater smooch from The Rock at 0:11.
The Gifted
Release date: 2017
Is it just us or does The Gifted look a tad bland? Set in the X-Men universe and directed by Mr X-Men himself, Bryan Singer, it should in theory be awesome. Instead the first trailer does little to distinguish itself from other likeminded series such as Heroes and more recently Cloak & Dagger. Hit play below to see for yourself.
Best bit: Yeah, struggling a bit to find one.
