Black Widow getting standalone film as Marvel Studios hires writer
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 11 January 2018 | Categories: NewsOne of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) fringe characters is getting her own movie, with Variety reporting that a Black Widow film is on the cards. The move makes quite a bit of sense, especially as the MCU is short of female-led superhero flicks, with only 2019's Captain Marvel being the only project worth mentioning. Add to that the success of last year's Wonder Woman, and Marvel Studios could certainly benefit from more movies in which the protagonist is female.
At this stage the full details of the project are not known, with the only development being the hiring of a screenwriter in Jac Schaeffer. As such we have no idea when this Black Widow film will take place in the MCU timeline. Currently Scarlett Johansson is set to reprise the role for the two-part Infinity War films, but her fate there on is a bit murkier.
Also unknown is where Marvel Studios has the space to fit in a Black Widow film, especially with the next two years chock-a-block with various projects.
As far as plot goes, perhaps an origin story for Natasha Romanov might be best, particular as part of her training featured in Age of Ultron. That said, it may be a bit too similar to Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming movie Red Sparrow, which too features a Russian spy.
