If you grew up during the 1990s, you might have stumbled across the 1992 horror slasher Candyman. Say Candyman five times while staring into a mirror and he will appear, bringing his hooked arm and bees along for the ride. 28 years after the original, Candyman is getting an update, coming from Get Out director Jordan Peel’s Monkeypaw Productions.

The new movie is apparently a spiritual sequel to the original, taking viewers back to the decrepit Chicago neighbourhood where events first took place. This part of town has now, of course, been gentrified, with little mention of the urban legend of Candyman. Up and coming artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Watchmen) starts exploring Cabrini-Green and finds himself drawn to the myth when he hears about Candyman spoken in hushed tones. It’s not long, however, until myth becomes reality and the Candyman is back slashing.

The movie is directed by Nia DaCosta, responsible for 2018’s Little Woods, who is expected to explore the racial undertones of the original even further. Peele famously said that the 92 movie is "a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre." Lucky for fans, Tony Todd is set to reprise his role as Daniel Robitaille / The Candyman, a great choice if they want to build on the legacy of the original.
