With a strong passion for portraiture and photojournalism, Andy Lund has captured many faces in his professional career. We wanted to know if there is one that will always stay with him.

Andy Lund: This is a difficult question to answer, because I find portraiture incredibly personal and intimate. There is a beautiful non-verbal dialogue between the photographer and subject. The subject is opening themselves to you and allowing you into their personal space, dropping their guard. It is an incredibly intimate relationship between (mostly) strangers, and it usually doesn’t last very long, yet as the photographer you are on the quest to find the soul of that person in that moment.

If I had to think of one person who has stayed with me after all these years, I would say an Aboriginal artist, Eddie Blitner, who I shot a portrait of whilst in Australia on a story for National Geographic Traveller. We spoke very little and yet we communicated intensely and you can see it in the portrait I shot. Years later I can still see every whisker and wrinkle on his face by just closing my eyes.
