It was always going to be a tough task to measure up to the presenting legacy that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May conjured up during 20-plus seasons of Top Gear. That unenviable task fell to radio and TV personality Chris Evans, but after one season, he has decided to step down from the motoring show. Evans took to Twitter to make the statement, "Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough."

Despite his efforts to replicate the rapport that Clarkson and co. had with one another and their fans, Evans fell short. For anyone who's watched the 23rd season currently airing on South African televisions, there is undoubtedly something missing. Something that even the star power of Matt LeBlanc (Friends) cannot rectify.

As for what the future of Top Gear holds, the BBC has not officially commented on the matter, only confirming that Evans has indeed left the show. Will they find a new host? Will LeBlanc step up and present solo? While all these questions are up in the air, it's clear fans of the series had already made their mind up before the new season started. This is evidenced by the fact that the new series trailer featured below has more than three times as many dislikes as likes.
