Damon Lindelof says HBO Watchmen series will be set in modern day
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 23 May 2018 | Categories: newsTrying to bring the work of Alan Moore to life on the big screen has proved a tough task, just take a look at the mixed reactions that films like V for Vendetta and Watchmen have garnered. The latter is currently being developed into a TV series for HBO, and Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) is aiming to bring an adaptation of the graphic novel to screens later this year or in early 2019.
With Moore less than pleased that others are adapting his work, along with fans of the graphic novel noting their dissatisfaction, Lindelof recently took to Instagram to share his personal history with Watchmen, noting how much it means to him and adding that the TV series will look to 'remix' the well known story.
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago… Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed," writes Lindelof.
Lindelof also notes that Watchmen looked to highlight and tackle issues of the time, touching on the 80s politics of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev. For his adaptation, Lindelof wants to take a similar approach, but frame it in the modern era of politics.
"Ours needs to resonate with the frequency of Trump and May and Putin and the horse that he rides around on, shirtless... Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them," adds Lindelof.
As such, it's clear that much like Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' work for Watchmen reflected issues of their time, Lindelof's version will hopefully do the same for our current era. No pressure.
