Dell Technologies has taken another step this year in perhaps what may seem like an unexpected direction. This time though it isn't a PC line refresh, but rather worker's ears that are getting some extra attention, with the company launching its newest addition to its AI-based audio portfolio, the Dell Pro Plus Earbuds.

In the past few years, the earbuds space has become increasingly competitive, with Samsung's Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, Apple's newest Airpods 3 Pro, and others, like Sony and Bose, all competing for a space in your ear canal.

With the Dell Pro Plus Earbuds the company is entering the fray, but rather than targeting music-listening consumers, it is aimed firmly at professionals and workers.

The company explained the move by pointing out that in today’s hybrid work environment, clear, reliable audio is essential.

''These earbuds combine advanced noise filtering, voice optimisation and all-day comfort for employees with easy deployment and manageability for IT teams,'' it said.

Of course, the first question to come to mind, is what do Dell's earbuds have that help distinguish them from the crowd? The answer is that the Dell Pro Plus Earbuds  are apparently  the world’s first earbuds to earn Microsoft Teams Open Office Certification, which means they are firmly aimed at enabling seamless communication and collaboration, particularly for those on the move.

In IT, complexity has long been a dirty word. Having a myriad of different devices on a variety of platforms, standards and different cybersecurity vulnerabilities give IT departments constant headaches. Dell Technologies noted that their new earbuds ''simplify the challenge of managing audio solutions in a hybrid work environment, ensuring employees have the tools they need to stay productive and connected.'' The earbuds are backed up by a centralised dashboard for easy device configuration, firmware updates and fleet oversight.

So why not just use their existing earbuds of choice, whether they are Samsung's Apple's or others? Dell Technologies addressed this one too, asserting that  consumer-grade audio gear often falls short in professional settings.

As became very obvious during the pandemic, when we were all collaborating over Teams or Zoom, background noise, barking dogs or clinking coffee cups can derail meetings and reduce productivity.

In hybrid work environments, where half the meeting happens over a microphone, clear, reliable audio is mission critical.

The company stressed that because its buds are certified for Microsoft Teams and Zoom, they can ensure flawless compatibility with the most popular professional platforms.

Furthermore, Microsoft Teams Open Office Certification guarantees top-tier audio quality, even in shared or high-noise environments, and ensures the strictest performance standards.

As is the case with Samsung and Apple’s offerings, Dell Technologies are similarly designed to integrate seamlessly with Dell laptops, docks and software, eliminating device compatibility issues.

We were reassured that the buds are able to withstand real-world conditions with an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance, making them tough enough for real-world conditions. They are stored in a compact charging case.

The company asserted that its new earbuds redefine productivity in modern workplaces. ‘’With superior mic quality, adaptive ANC, multi-host connectivity and premium audio experience, the Dell Pro Plus earbuds strike the perfect balance between IT priorities and employee expectations,’’ the company stated.

It further highlighted some key features:

·       AI-Powered Noise-Canceling Microphone: Leveraging a deep neural network trained on 500+ million noise samples, the mic isolates your voice with precision. Future-ready updates are easily deployed via Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) as the AI model and noise database evolve.

·       Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): Dynamically minimises background noise in busy environments, while Enhanced Transparency Mode keeps you aware of your surroundings when needed.

·       All-Day Comfort with a Custom Fit: Unlike competitors offering just three ear tip sizes, the Dell Pro Plus Earbuds include four (XS, S, M, L) for a perfect fit. Combined with a lightweight design, they’re built for extended wear.

·       Effortless Touch Controls: Manage ANC, Transparency Mode, volume, calls, and music with simple touch gestures keeping you focused and in control.

·       Personalised Audio Experience: Customise equalisers, presets, and transparency settings through the Dell Audio Mobile App for sound tailored to your preferences.

·       Seamless Multi-Device Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.3 and multi-host pairing support up to eight devices. The Dell Pair feature ensures quick setup and smooth transitions, while the compact Dell Wireless USB-C Audio Receiver fits neatly into the earbud case for easy portability and effortless switching between Dell Audio devices.

One thing we don’t know yet is the pricing and local availability, but, being Dell Technologies, we expect pricing will be very competitive and that they will be available locally soon. It is also interesting to see yet another option in the earbud space, squarely aimed at workers rather than audiophiles or casual listeners. Users looking for great sound have never been more spoilt for choice.
