Microsoft's forthcoming Project Scorpio drummed up a bit more interest this week, with the company inviting Digital Foundry for an exclusive look at some of the specifications and performance the new console aims to deliver. While a full rundown of all the specs is still happening at E3 this year (11 June), Digital Foundry's report suggest 4K gaming will form the core of the Project Scorpio gaming experience.

What do we know so far then?

For one it will run at 6 teraflops, as initially anticipated, surpassing the PS4 Pro's 4.2 teraflops graphics performance in the process. The memory is also getting an overhaul, with 12 GB of GDDR5 planned, but Microsoft is retaining AMD's Jaguar CPU. Gamers were hoping for an upgrade to AMD's new Ryzen offering as the Jaguar was introduced in 2013 and varying iterations of it run on the Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 and PS4 Pro.

That said, Microsoft notes that the x86 cores within Project Scorpio are 31% faster than the Xbox One, with the company's custom GPU on this new console running at a rapid 1.172 GHz. Furthermore, Microsoft is claiming that Xbox One games designed to run at 900p or 1080p, could make the jump to the native 4K onboard Project Scorpio, with a boost in performance for those titles also being promised.

While it was not a full reveal, it's clear that Project Scorpio will be a processing powerhouse. As for all the other pieces of information, 11 June should prove more illuminating.
