If you thought that Dune is not safe in the hands of Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Arrival), the first trailer should make those evaporate like water on Arrakis. Scheduled for release for 18 December 2020, Dune might just be the release of a challenging year.

Based on Frank Herbert Nebula and Hugo Award winning novel, the movie follows Paul Atreides’ journey to the inhospitable planet Arrakis to ensure his families’ fortunes. The planet is mined for Melange, or as it’s commonly known across the universe - Spice, a vital element not just to space travel but also human consciousness.

Dune features a star-studded cast, including one of our new favourites, Timothée Chalamet (The King) as Paul, Oscar Isaac (Drive) as his father the Duke Leto Atreides, and  Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) as his mother, Lady Jessica. Marvel and DC regulars, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and Josh Brolin also features. 

Villeneuve’s Dune certainly tunes down from David Lynch’s OTT 1984 version, and added a layer of sleekness that we’ve seen in Blade Runner 2049. He is, of course, an excellent storyteller, so expect Herbert’s novel to truly shine.

Although we’re disappointed that Alejandro Jodorowsky’s version never made it to the big screen (watch the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune), at least Dune 2020 is helmed by arguably the best director currently in the chair.
