Is emulation the most sincerest form of backwards compatibility? While the latest Xbox One update gives users that functionality, those with a PS4 console are still holding out. While Sony hasn't detailed any plans for backwards compatibility, Digital Foundry has discovered emulated versions of PSone and PS2 games as part of the Star Wars: Battlefront Limited Edition Bundle for PS4. 

Those games include Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter and according to Digital Foundry, there is evidence to support its emulator claims. The first sees the Start and Select buttons of yesteryear's controller now mapped to either side of the new Dualshock 4 controller. Furthermore, the in-game controls are the same as one would find on the PS2 controller layout, according to Digital Foundry, which is something not commonly found in remastered games. Next, when the games load, the old-school PlayStation logo can be seen. As Engadget points out, this would only be possible because the games were produced by Lucasarts and not Sony.   

If Digital Foundry's theory turns out to be true, this could be the first evidence of Sony's PlayStation Now's cloud enabled service at work. While we await more clarity, it's clear backwards compatibility is a must.
