Facebook appears to be getting into the processor game, with a recent job listing discovered by Bloomberg looking for a manager to assemble an "end-to-end SoC / ASIC, firmware, and driver development organisation."

While the plan seems to be in the very early stages of development, it's clear that Facebook aims to be more self-reliant when it comes to silicon, and not require the assistance of companies like Qualcomm, Intel and Nvidia.

Precisely what the chipsets would be used for is unclear for now, but with its own servers, as well as Oculus VR headsets to consider, there are a number of scenarios were they could be put to use. One area postulated by The Verge, is Artificial Intelligence, with Facebook investing heavily in AI as it aims to empower more of its platforms with the technology.

It's a move that other tech companies have made of late, with Apple and Google looking internally when it comes to powering their devices and infrastructure. Should Facebook do the same, it would indeed make the company an even stronger prospect than it currently is.
