A couple of months ago news broke that Intel was considering the development on its own smart glasses, akin to that of the failed Google Glass. With the interest in wearables dying down substantially from its height a few years back, it looks like smart glasses are not deemed a worthy consideration at present. This as Intel has decided to forego its smart glasses plan due to lack of investment, according to The Information (paywall).

As such, the codenamed Vaunt smart glasses that Intel showcased internally back in February are now just a souvenir of what could have been, with Intel reportedly shutting down its entire wearables division.

Whether the company will revisit wearables and smart glasses in the future is unknown, but for now it says that its focus is on chipset business as it takes a more cautious approach to new technologies.

"Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market. The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don't support further investment," says an Intel statement to Engadget.
